Values and Beliefs That Form the HR Articles Foundation
Values and Beliefs That Form the HR Articles FoundationValues and Beliefs That Form the HR Articles FoundationDeeply-held values, beliefs, and principles form the foundation upon which this Human Resurces site is built. unterstellung deeply-held values, beliefs, and principles form the underpinnings for the approaches recommended and the objectives for this Human Resources website. We will add to these over time, but these are deeply-held values, beliefs, and principles which we trust. They form the foundation for my work and my writing. How do these values, beliefs, and principles compare with yours? Deeply-Held, Foundational Values, and Beliefs In the workplace, we are all equal. We just have different jobs and callings through which we are challenged to add value every day.We operate from our own value system. These values profoundly affect everything that we do or say. Thus, identifying and living our values is crucial.Employees are your most important assets.Consequently, comp anies you influence should appreciate employees and act out of a genuine belief that employees, along with the customers, matter the most. When this thinking prevails, organizational decisions become easy. Are they employee-friendly while protecting the company that provides employment? If so, implement them. Do they recognize the fact that, but for your employees, a competitor could set up shop tomorrow and offer your same products and services? Result your company could lose. abflug with every employee from a position of trust. They will most frequently live up to the trust you accord them in keeping with your high expectations for their performance - and their expectations of themselves. Trust - but verify - so that dishonest employees who lack integrity, fail to keep commitments, and let the team down, are dealt with quickly -before they affect the commitment and engagement of the rest of your coworkers.Hire employees who are passionate about serving customers. The customers are the reason your organization exists and you wont succeed without them. Neither will your employees. Decisions are made, not because they are more convenient for your employees, but because they truly serve customers more effectively. Your employees (except for some interns and high school students) are grown-ups. Treat them like the thinking, choosing, life-living adults that they are. Adults dont need close supervision or a boss who tells them what to do. They dont need a mother. They need colleagues, friends, and organization leaders.Dont ever expect a colleague to support, with one hundred percent of their energy and passion, any process, decision, or approach, that they were not part of creating.Work is most congruent with our needs and values when the contribution that we make also fulfills our personal mission and vision. Identifying and living a personal mission and vision is key to this balance. True diversity will rock your workplace. We are not referring to artificial appr eciation or politically correct (PC) statements and mandatory programs about race, color, or creed. You should advocate genuine appreciation for and integration of the vast variety of talents, skills, backgrounds, experiences, generational differences, and beliefs that diverse employees bring to your workplace.People talk about organizations having a mission and vision incessantly - mostly for the wrong reasons. How organizations go about sharing them with all employees leaves much to be desired. Employees want to be part of something that is bigger than themselves. They want to feel that their employer has an overall direction in which their work and contribution fits and matters. So, articulate the mission and the vision and share them in a manner that will help employees integrate them. The only way to help employees internalize the mission, vision, strategies, and goalsis to hold a conversation with each employee.During the conversation, the employee identifies how his or her wor k can contribute to the achievement, how they need to grow and develop skills to better contribute, and how their work fits into the broader work of other employees. When organizations hold these conversations, magical partnerships ensue. Decisions are made correctly. Time is spent on contribution. Company einzelschritts should be transparent to employees successes, failures, challenges, financial results, goals, prospects, customer interaction, benefits cost and review, competitive environment, industry prospects, financial outlook, and all other aspects of a companys operation should be shared transparently with employees. How can employees contribute, share your dreams, and make appropriate decisions in your interests if they lack fundamental information? They cant. Do you want wise, knowledgeable employees making great decisions? Make information transparent. Do not reward employees who block its flow or hoard information for their own personal purposes. Managers and frontline su pervisors are the most powerful force for good - or for ill - in your organization. They either learn to manage people in ways that empower, enable and reinforce positive power in your work environment or they should be fired.Behavior that reinforces petty egos, blocks information flow, and fails to respect the dignity, rights, and humanness of every employee is not just unacceptable, it is criminal.Think that you can train a manager who treats people with a lack of respect? Think again. You can train skills you cant train attitude, emotional maturity, beliefs about people, or values. That was his or her parents job.Your job? Get rid of him or her. Before they destroy the work outlook of other employees. And, while were on the topic, employees dont change much either they just become more of who they are - or sneaky.

Treat Your Coworkers Like Dogs (Really!)
Treat Your Coworkers Like Dogs (Really!) Treat Your Coworkers Like Dogs (Really!) Treat Your Coworkers Like Dogs (Really!) Around this time last year, I wrote a post about office pet peeves and asked you to share the ones that bug you the most (which you can still do!). Now, I wonder about the weird and uncomfortable coworker who might not act out your pet peeves, but gets under your skin and drives you crazy nonetheless. Punk Rock HR provided the best advice I've read on dealing with coworkers who both drive you nuts and are too thick-headed to take subtle hints: Pretend youre Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer! The Cesar Millan wayinvolves being clear direct with your coworker. Look at his behavior, determine whats inappropriate, and tell him to stop. No discussion. No negotiation. Be kind, be clear, and be timely. Not only does this idea make complete sense, it's pretty funny too! Did you ever imagine using dog-training skills on a coworker? Sit, Frank! Stop talking now. Good boy. Nevertheless, everyone works with that guy. (Oh, and that guy isn't always a guy...there are plenty of women who break the same office etiquette rules.) And you may think life would be so much better if that guy got canned, but chances are he'd be replaced with someone who's just as bad (but you can dream)! Curious what most companies consider proper office etiquette? Here are some examples. Read them, compare them to your own habits and behaviors, and be considerate of those around you! Interview Questions About Your Goals for the Future
Interview Questions About Your Goals for the Future Interview Questions About Your Goals for the Future One of the questions commonly asked during a job interview is, âWhat are your goals for the future?â This question is a good way for employers to determine if your career goals are a good fit for the company. Plus, it helps hiring managers make sure that you actually have some goals â" in other words, your answer reveals whether or not you have ambition and some type of plan. You dont need to know exactly where youre planning to be in five years, but you need to be pointed in some direction. Employers also ask about goals because they want to be sure you wont be moving on to another job right away. It will be a red flag if your aspirations have nothing to do with the type of job, company, or industry where youre hoping to get hired. New hires are expensive to bring on board and train. If you leave in a hurry, theyll be right back at square one. How to Answer Interview Questions About Your Goals for the Future The most successful candidates are the ones whose ultimate aims align with those of the organization, even if they dont plan to spend their entire career working for the same employer. Few employers expect lifetime commitment, but itâs important to convey that your career goals are compatible with the companyâs path. 1:09 5 Tips for Answering Questions About Career Goals The best way to respond to interview questions about your goals for the future is to focus on the position and the company you are interviewing with. This is why its important to do your research before you arrive for the job interview. Knowing about the companyâs culture and business practices will help you emphasize your ability to solve their problems. Donât discuss your personal goals outside of work, such as having a family or traveling around the world, in response to this question. This information is not relevant and could knock you out of contention for the job. The hiring manager is interested in what you are looking for in your next job, not what you want to do next in your private life. Think of your goals and those of the company as a Venn diagram: you want to keep your answer confined to the overlapping section. While you should never lie during a job interview, its best to stick to the parts of your vision that include the organization. For example, if youre a newly minted registered nurse, and the hospital youre interviewing with doesnt have a lot of openings for nurse practitioners, now is not the time to mention that youre considering going back to school in a few years. On the other hand, the hospital might clearly outline a career path for their registered nurses, in which they encourage them to go back to school while continuing to work part-time. If you know this is the case, and you are interested in becoming a nurse practitioner, emphasize your interest in this path. How to Ask An Interviewer About Career Paths While you should have a pretty good idea of how you would like to see your career progress, and how you plan to express those goals during your interview, itâs also ok to feel out the interviewerâs thoughts about potential growth with the company. Of course, your main focus should be on selling your candidacy for the job at hand, but inquiring about how the company might promote an employee with your qualifications is relevant if you are seriously interested in joining the team. When it comes time to ask the interviewer questions, you will have the opportunity to learn more about typical career growth for someone in this job. You might ask, âAt XYZ Hospital, what is a typical career path for someone recently credentialed as an RN?â Just be careful not to seem too eager to move beyond the job you are applying for. Although its fine to express a desire to expand your role in the future, the emphasis should remain on your strong interest in the position at hand, and how you can add value in that role. Examples of Best Answers My long-term goals involve growing with a company where I can continue to learn, take on additional responsibilities, and contribute as much value as possible to the team. I love that your company emphasizes professional development opportunities. I would take full advantage of the educational resources available.I see myself as a top-performing employee in a well-established organization like this one. I plan on enhancing my skills and continuing my involvement in related professional associations. Once I gain additional experience, I would like to have the opportunity to move on from a technical position to management. I know this has been a common path for many people in this position, and I think in time this would be a logical move forward for me. However, for now, I am excited about focusing on and applying my technical skills in this job.

How to Fast Track Your Career - The Muse
How to Fast Track Your Career - The Muse How to Fast Track Your Career I considered myself an ambitious person when I started my career, yet I listened to what everyone said about having to put in my time. Rack up some points. Earn my stripes. Problem is, this method takes time. Years, possibly even decades. Even though this is what I was trained to expect, I never felt like I had time for that. Iâve always been a fast learner, and I wanted to test my limits- not bide my time and wait for someone else to decide if and when I was ready to move up the ladder. So, when I changed the direction of my career, I decided not to wait on other people to move things along- but to take matters into my own hands. While Iâm definitely not at the level I once was, Iâm moving up a lot faster than I- or anyone else- expected. Hereâs how I fast-tracked my career and got the results I wanted. 1. Say What You Want and What You Can Do Negotiatingâs always been a pain point for me, but when I transitioned from financial services to being a full-time writer, I no longer had a choice. I had to be specific about what I would do and what I wanted for it. Being a freelancer taught me how much I value my time and what exactly itâs worth. You figure out pretty quickly that people will pay you what you ask for, nothing more. So you need to be brave and just ask for it. Looking back, I realize this tactic wouldâve worked in my old life too, if Iâd had the guts to apply it. Unless youâre being unrealistic, thereâs really no downside to asking for what you want, as well as being honest about what you can deliver. If you can do something, speak up and say what it means for you to achieve that- even if itâs technically beyond your scope of responsibilities. If you know you can figure something out, offer to take part in a project. The moment I stopped being self-conscious about where I thought I was supposed to be and focused on what I knew I could do and what that was worth, I leapfrogged past a few rungs on the ladder. 2. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver If you want to impress people, well, impress them already. âHow?â you ask. Exceed their expectations. The single biggest factor in accelerating my career was my ability to impress my clients, colleagues, managers, and executives. (Just be warned: This is a tactic only to be used if you can back it up. Over-promising and under-delivering will set you back eons.) If your goal is to always do more than what you signed up to do, two things will happen. First, everyone will start expecting great things from you. Second, someoneâs going to notice your talents arenât being properly utilized, and youâll find your way into a new job title. If itâs not someone at your current job, it will be someone you network or interview with. 3. Network No one wants to hear networking is a part of the plan, but we all know it canât be ignored. Itâs like brushing your teeth. You might be tired and your bed is calling, but you know youâll regret it if you donât brush. Networking is pretty much like that. If youâre not making waves where youâre at, branching out to your network is the best way to get a feel for what you should do next. The beauty of a good network is that these people are usually objective and often have your best interests at heart. If they think you can do better somewhere else, theyâll tell you. This is great, not only for the ego boost if youâre under-valued, but the sanity check that you do deserve more than what youâre getting. Your network has been there, done that, and theyâll spill all their secrets if youâre lucky. Tap into this resource early and often, and youâll have a perpetual career counselor at your fingertips. When I announced I would be leaving the career that shaped me and funded the purchase of many vacations, a car, my first house, and Iâm sure lots of other things, just about everyone was sure Iâd fail in a spectacular fashion. What they didnât realize is that all those years had taught me something. It doesnât take decades of experience to get ahead. It just takes careful planning and determination. And maybe a few Red Bulls and espressos. Photo of runner courtesy of Shutterstock.

This is what the cofounder of LOLA looks for when hiring
This is what the cofounder of LOLA looks for when hiring This is what the cofounder of LOLA looks for when hiring In case you havenât heard, it is no longer taboo to talk about periods. And a big part of that is the growth of the natural tampon market as well as femtech companies and other feminine healthcare startups that are all about promoting honesty and transparency and empowering women by giving them more choices and control. One of the pioneers of this new market is LOLA, the organic tampon startup which launched all the way back in 2014 with its line of direct-to-consumer feminine care products. This was before the Womenâs March, before period shaming was a concept and before cofounders Alexandra Friedman and Jordana Kier had raised $11.2 million in funding according to Crunchbase (early investors included Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, and Karlie Kloss.)They also just launched Sex by LOLA, a new line of natural latex condoms, chemical-free personal lubricant and first of its kind 100% natural cleansing wipes, which marks the brandâs first expansion outside of menstrual care.Ladd ers spoke with Friedman about collaboration, what she looks for when hiring, and being a cofounder, and mother. On how they inspire collaboration with their team Weâre lucky that our team at LOLA is naturally very driven, creative and resourceful; itâs inspiring to be a part of such a passionate team that so mission oriented. One of the best ways we inspire collaboration is through regular team-building activities and volunteer days that help ground us and remind us of our shared mission. Iâm also encouraged by our teamâs openness to lending a hand across the business, and willingness to engage in conversations about their own reproductive health, whether through sharing their first period stories or having really honest office conversations around pregnancy and sexual health. As a leader, I think itâs important to create and foster open and honest relationships with your team, especially at a company like ours that is built around destigmatizing taboo topics and sparking candid dialogue. On learning to be a better leaderI grew up in New York City with two full-time working parents who supported and empowered me in every way - but who also made it very clear that one day I would be expected to support myself. Being raised this way has shaped the kind of leader I am - I want my team to know they have my support, but to also realize that I expect them to be individually empowered to drive the success of an outcome.Iâve also worked for a lot of different types of leaders, and from each experience have internalized lessons of what to do and what not to do in certain situations. Even some of the most difficult people Iâve encountered in my career have taught me valuable things about what it means to lead well. While I donât know how to qualify âbetterâ in terms of leading, I can say that each year brings new lessons that are humbling, give me perspective and help me lead with empathy and a more clearly defined vision. On what they look for in po tential candidatesEveryone on our team here is passionate about LOLAâs mission and who we are. I look for candidates who show real, genuine enthusiasm for our mission and vision. Having a passion for what weâre doing here is a must, and when we see that passion, we want to work with you.Another characteristic thatâs important to have in the start-up world is the ability to work cross-functionally in a team, learn quickly, and multi-task. LOLA is a high-growth environment as we expand into new product categories and become the first lifelong brand for a womanâs body. Priorities and workloads shift from one week to the next. We need to know that our team can run up a learning curve quickly, support those around you, and wear a bunch of hats.On being a mom and a cofounder Being a mom, especially being a mom to a daughter, has motivated me and made me more committed to LOLAâs mission of empowering women at all stages of their lives. As Iâve encountered new and different pha ses of my own reproductive life, Iâve realized the multitude of ways that weâre able to help women through our products and community at LOLA.

Four Tips for Choosing the Best Candidate for the Position
Four Tips for Choosing the Best Candidate for the Position Four Tips for Choosing the Best Candidate for the Position While many articles and blogs devote plenty of time to the job-searching, interview and offer process, far fewer take on the mission of education from the employerâs perspective. If youâre a hiring manager or other decision maker in your companyâs candidate onboarding program, you know just how much is riding our your ability to make a well-informed decision when it comes to selecting just the right candidate for your organizationâs most recent job opening. With ever-increasing concerns regarding the costs of candidate recruitment, employee turnover, and overall company productivity, itâs more important than ever to ensure you choose just the right piece for your staffing puzzle. If this scenario sounds familiar, youâre in luck. Weâve compiled four easy and simple strategies to help you choose the best candidate for the position during your next recruitment endeavor. Experience Counts When it comes t selecting an appropriate candidate for a callback, interview or offer, perhaps the biggest consideration will be their relevant and applicable prior experience. This is often the easiest category for most employers as the information on interviewees can be found on their resume, CV or networking profiles. Easy, however, doesnât always mean simple and there are a few experience specific considerations to keep in mind to help with candidate selection. Hiring managers should give more than just a cursory once-over to a candidateâs job titles. While many labels are standardized across industries, you will occasionally run into vast differences in reporting hierarchies, day to day responsibilities and general sophistication across different industry employers. Greater weight should be given to the description of prior work over the actual job title. Keep an eye out for relative size of previous employers also. Director of HR for a 10 person company has a much different level of sophistication than for a 100 or 1000 person establishment and the differences can affect a candidateâs ability to perform the job and potential compensation package. So Does Personality As the saying goes, experience is as experience does. Okay, so we might have made that piece of sage advice up, but there is definite truth in the fact that education and experience should be far from the sole consideration when selecting the prime candidate for your open gig. Hiring managers should spend some time assessing the current personalities within their department. Finding a good personality fit may mean taking into consideration details such as how outgoing a candidate is, how talkative they are and how engaging they appear generally. If you have a quiet, reserved department the social butterfly of an employee may not fit in as well as someone who is a bit less chatty. Likewise, if your team enjoys socializing outside of work, a team member who is reclusive but talented may cause waves or have problems properly integrating with the group. If there is a personality mismatch, this doesnât mean they are a no-go as a candidate but hiring managers should be prepared with a plan for integration or for addressing different working styles or points of view. What about those Soft Skills When it comes to choosing the best interview candidate for the position, another key area of qualification may be a bit harder to define but is infinitely valuable for ensuring productivity and performance. Weâre talking about that list of undefinable personality traits that make someone not only a good co-worker, but that also allow them to execute judgment and discernment in their decision-making process on the job. Soft skills, as these traits are called, include personality traits such as intuitiveness, tact, professionalism and other characteristics that are hard to put your finger on but instantly recognizable. Before interviewing your candidates, put together an âideal quality listâ youâd like to see in the soft skill department. While you may not be able to snag an individual with each of these traits, a quality hire will possess at least several soft skills that will help them perform in the position. Think Outside the Box As far as closing advice goes, hiring managers should realize that the key to choosing the right candidate for their open job listing will often involve thinking outside of the box. Take for example job title or experience. If youâre in need of a sales professional your first inclination may be to hire someone whoâs been working in the field for a number of years. Depending on your individual companyâs needs and the personalities of those already in the department, however, someone with customer service or HR skills who is outgoing and a quick learner may perform equally as well, if not better, than a seasoned professional. Look for commonality in job duties more than matching job titles and be open to the idea of cross training. This will help ensure that you hire the best available candidate with the highest likelihood of long-term contribution to the role.

Year-over-year pay growth: 1.8 percent Job growth (2014-2024): 34 percent Although you wonât land a managerial position when youâre starting out, if this data trend continues, working towards a position as a human resources manager will probably pay off. Year-over-year pay growth: 1.4 percent Remember, before choosing a career (or switching to a new one), you should take into account your interests and working style, as well as the pay and growth you can expect.
